Looked through onthelosthighway.tumblr

Great home built kart... get a look at the steering wheel! Photo was taken by John Gutman, in Georgia, 1937 http://www.johngutmann.org/viewer/index.html and incredibly, ridethemachine.tumblr posted this yesterday... but I found it on "onthelosthighway.tumblr" today

The look of a maniac, ain't that a grin!
Dangerous and deadly racing.
http://onthelosthighway.tumblr.com/ is a guy who took these photos of his dad, and his dad's 1924 original and untouched Harley Davidson
http://onthelosthighway.tumblr.com/ is mostly tattoos, it's NSFW, but it also has a lot of respect for Johnny Cash, Hank Williams, and Babe Ruth.

Sidecars and motorbikes

The above was a young woman named Della Crewe who decided to drive from Waco Texas to New York with her dog Trouble in 1915. It was 5300 some odd miles.

Also notable for being a Harley with a sidecar, ... but these are different sidecars

the above and below are ambulance sidecars

1951 Panhead at El Mirage, going to break the class speed record

that headlight cover? Is a braincase helmet, and just the right size to cover the tach. brilliant
The two filler caps, are on seperate tanks, one is oil, the other is the fuel... only came on one Harley that way... I can't recall the year he told me, might have been the 1943 model

The Indian vs Harley (pre 1965) rivalry is going to be the focus of a race this week near Yosemite Park, California

This group consists of a pair of Indian Twins, three Excelsior Ace Fours, and at least one Harley Davidson, all ready for some real road racing on a public road.

For eighteen years Harley & Indian enthusiasts in Australia have been recreating the rivalry that was so much a part of motorcycling in the Twenties, Thirties, and Forties of the last century. In 2011 we are bringing that Rivalry home to America where the bikes were built! The Great Indian V Harley Race of 2011 will be based in Oakhurst California, right on the doorstep to Yosemite.

During the ride we will have checkpoints, timed mileage sections and other challenges. At each checkpoint the rider will be earning points for his brand of motorcycle. At the end of our event we will gather for a banquet feast and crown the race victor and who will receive bragging rights for the next year, as the winner of the great race.

Event Registration fee: $185.00

All bikes must be 1965 & older, and older bikes will now receive an incentive!

1940-1965 Models - No Bonus Points
1930-1939 Models - 10% Bonus added to your point total
1920-1929 Models - 20% Bonus added to your point total
1900-1919 Models - 30% Bonus added to your point total

So far we have several bikes from the teens, twenties and thirties entered, including a 1915 HD Ghost Model!

Day one: Oakhurst to Mammoth Pool
Day two: Oakhurst to Yosemite Park
Day three: Oakhurst to Mariposa

Fun looking Sportster.

Fun looking Sporty.  Man this would not be tough to duplicate... IF you could find that exhaust and seat.

Reader Ride. 1950 Panhead. Sweet Custom Chop.

Matt from the Machinehead blog (be sure to check it out. Lots of great stuff) finished up a very nice build of an 1950 Panhead.

He Writes in:

Hey steve...hope your doing well....I've just finished my latest bike....a 1950 panhead....I'm happy with the way it came out ...was lots of work but it rides beautifully....anyway in case you didn't catch it on the site here are some shots....guy from greasy kulture is going to do a piece on it.......my attention to the Mark 1 Lemans now....

Matt

Thanks for the pics Matt. Like I posted on your comments I think it a very well balanced build. Looks like you could ride the tar out of it.  Can't wait to see that Mark 1!!

Reader Ride. Nice Superglide.

Steve G sent me these a while back and they got lost in the shuffle.  Sorry bout that.

I'm sure folks have noticed that I don't post many modern American cruisers.  This is not from prejudice on my part.  I like them fine.  But there are so many sites already dedicated to them (that do it very well) so I tend to shy away.  Anyway, this one caught my eye because it's got some really nice "go" touches without overdoing the "show".  It looks to be a cruiser that you could ride the hell out of.    Function and form and all that ...  Thanks again Steve.

Reader Ride. An American Harley in Italy!

As opposed to the Italian Harleys we've seen in America.

Marco Writes in:

By Request... The Jay Springsteen Harley Racebike

Had a request from the previous post to see more of the #9 harley in the background. I know I've posted this bike before but I don't get tired of looking at it.

By the way, the Google Search feature and the "word-cloud" really does work pretty well

Some Reader Ride "Wanderlust" Shots.

I think I've hit a vein here. Judging by the response I'd say there's a lot of it going around!
Paul and Aaron sent in these 2 great bikes and great shots!  Thanks gents!

Paul's 2000 883 on a trip to the Outer Banks of North Carolina with his son last year....

...and Aaron's Triumph Trophy 900 at Lake Almanor in 2003.
